Sustainability of Leather
As B.J.Leathers we are committed to the environmental impacts around Leather and the sustainability of the Leathers
Leather in itself is a by-product of the meat industry, it is estimated in 2020 that 40% of hides were destroyed. We believe in using the hides creates a natural and long lasting product that would have been incinerated or gone to landfill.
The life cycle of the leathers all depends on its use and care after finishing, correct care and attention with all leather products will create a product lasting many years,  even after the leather product is finished with we encourage our suppliers to promote for the products to either be repaired, upscaled or recycled.
As B.J.Leathers we have zero chrome in all our leathers and only use Veg tanned crust, we promote veg tanned alternatives to traditional chrome leathers in the hope that our industry can become less dependant on chrome and eventually chrome free.
We work with our tanneries in Europe, who are part of the Leather Working Group to push for end user traceability.
We regularly visit our tanneries to ensure standards are kept, and to see if there are any new ways to improve the sustainability of the leathers
The Leather Industry as a whole is continually working to improve processes to make the leathers more sustainable and environmentally friendly
